I recently developed some film. This comes from all the way back in 2013. Gulu, Uganda while filming for this project.
Where do plastic bottle caps go? A lot of them end up in the ocean. 75% of ocean debris is made of plastic. And it doesn’t just float around. A lot of it ends up killing marine life, like this young albatross.
We talked with marine biology professor Richard Thompson yesterday, and he said:
It’s not about banning plastics. It’s about thinking about the ways that we deal with plastics at the end of their lifetime to make sure that we capture the resource.
On Midway Island, where this photo was taken, 1/3 of albatross chicks die from ingesting plastic. This image comes from photographer Chris Jordan, who says:
For me kneeling over their carcasses is like looking into a macabre mirror. These birds reflect back an appallingly emblematic result of the collective trance of our consumerism and runaway industrial growth.

from my on-going project on how ME’s lobsterman have been affected by the recent explosion in the lobster population
Having just been shamed by the social media gurus at NPR for my long break from tumblr I thought I’d start back up with one of my more recent photographs. This one was taken during a recent research trip. The forthcoming project is about the lobster industry in Maine. In recent years the Gulf of Maine has seen a glut of lobsters. Some research scientist believe this abundance is due to the over fishing of the lobster’s competition and predators coupled with a rise in sea temperatures which makes the lobsters more fecund. Others say it is simply due to the cyclical nature of the ocean. Regardless the effect is the same; the price of lobster is the lowest it’s been in decades.
